Farming in Greece is a serious business, much
of the produce is grown and sold locally, so you know who grew the fruit
you are buying! The life of a farmer is a an interesting one, so we went
to meet Nick Chrisitofos, a local farmer, typical of the Greek farmers
who live in the area. Nick’s farm is on the hills behind Galatas
and like many others the coming months will be a busy time.
Are you a local person, were you born in the area?
Yes, I was born in Galatas, most of my family still live here. My wife
is also local. |

Have you lived here all
your life?
No, after my Army service I work in the merchant navy for a year, then
ended up in Canada, where I stayed for 5 years. I worked on building dams.
That’s where I learned to speak English. I did get Canadian papers,
then returned to Greece for a holiday, but ended up staying here and buying
a tractor!
You are a farmer, what do you have on your farm?
I grow Olives and Lemons to sell, but also have Pears, Oranges, Grapes,
Figs, and some other fruits which I grow for the home. I have a few Goats,
Sheep, Chickens for meat, milk and cheese, I also have 1 dog and 15 cats!!
What is the best thing about living in this area?
It has a very nice view, it is very private and quiet. I have very good
neighbours, about 3-4 families who live here all year round and lots of
part timers.
What do you do in your spare time?
In Summer I like to go swimming, once the water is warm enough. In the
Winter I go to Galatas to meet friends for a coffee or beer. |
