In ancient times it was possible to walk between Poros and Galatas, but when that was no longer possible, the water taxis that run constantly between Poros and Galatas began, traditional known as “caiques”. In days gone by the boat captains used to sing to their passengers, but nowadays, probably with the introduction of the engine, they don’t have so much time. Still, all have the time to talk to any strangers that are interested in the history of the taxis, and the area. Some of the boats take visitors for longer excursions, including BBQ’s and evening beach parties. We went to meet one of the boat captains, Abouis Tsoukas, who owns the twin engine boat Georgios T. No. 32, to find out more...

Is yours a business that has been in the family or did you start it yourself?
Yes, this is a family business, my father has another boat. It is very unusual for someone to start new, most are still handed down through the family.

Do you know how many water taxis there are?

Between Poros and Galatas there are 37 boats.

Do you work out a rota between yourselves when you work?
No, we all work when we want, and go home when we want. It has happened that we all want to go home at the same time, but that is very rare!

What is the funniest incident you have come across on the boats?
Lots!, But not that you would like to put in print. The most common is late at night, after people have had a little too much to drink, they decide half way across to jump off and start swimming!

You speak English very well, how is that?
I lived in London for 5 years, working in restaurants, and then worked on ships for a while. But I came home to work the Taxis because this is the best place to be.

What do you do in your spare time?
I like to play football, and take my girlfriend swimming.
