Seasons in Greece - Winter Here in the Peloponnese Winter comes with a great show. It doesn't normally just rain here; it storms! Dramatic thunder storms rage across the Gulf from Athens, or creep down from Epidavros, it can be heard long before it hits, and storm watchers have a good chance of seeing the lightning show without getting wet. Only on the highest hills will you find snow, with the occasional sleet hitting the low lands, and a few mornings a frost lays on the ground until the sun is strong enough to melt it. After the first rains, the county side that has been parched brown all summer and Autumn, suddenly turns green, so it's like having two Springs, the hillsides turn back into grass meadows, and since most are covered with Olive trees that are deciduous, the Winter never gets that dull Grey look. The wintry days are often broken up with a few days of glorious sunshine, and warmer winds from the South, making everything bearable for those that need the Sun! What is also lovely are the birds that spend the Winter here, due to a milder climate than most of Europe, and even the traditional Christmas Robin can been seen. We can deck our halls with boughs of Holly, it grows wild here, as does the Ivy, so we celebrate the season of goodwill in harmony with nature. |
