Seasons in Greece - Spring

The Greeks say that Spring starts in the mountains; Going up into the hills behind Galatas you can see the proof of the saying. The roads are bordered with banks of wild flowers, too many to be able to name, and the air is filled with the sound of birds as they are busy finding the right nesting place. Small streams are still bringing the rain water down from up higher, and the trees share their fine Spring blossom with the bees. The shepherds are moving their herds along the hillside accompanied by the melodies from the bells around the necks of the leader sheep.
It will be another month before Spring creeps down to the low lands, where the cycle will begin again.
Spring is a time of renewal, new beginnings and hope of a good year on the land. It is perhaps the greatest season of them all.

Tortoises are now coming out of hibernation, they are indigenous to Greece, and many big ones can be seen along the road sides.

From you I have been absent in the Spring
When proud-pied April dressed in all his trim
Hath put a spirit of youth in every thing
That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him.
Shakespeare Sonnets. XCVIII
