Protect your dog It is now possible if your dogs has had the right vaccinations and is microchipped, to bring your dog on holiday to Greece with you. Most of the time this is perfectly safe, but in Greece there are two diseases in particular that you should be aware of, and protect against. The first is Tick Fever. This is from the ticks that live in the grass, or can come from other infected dogs. Make sure your dog is sprayed regularly with something like Frontline. Keep checking the dog for ticks, and remove as advised. Keep a watch on your dog for symptoms, such as nose bleeds, fever, convulsions. Take the dog immediately to a vet for treatment, if you have been on holiday with the dog make sure the vet knows this. The second disease is Kali Zar. This is carried by a very small fly, which normally bites at night. Again you can protect your dog with special anti Kali Zar sprays, available from Vets and pet shops, which need to be applied every other day, there is also drops which go on the back of the dog, these last a month. It is best to do both treatments. Both these diseases are treatable if caught in the early stages, and are rare even in the local street dogs. They are also completely harmless to humans, but it pays to be aware of them, and protect against them. |
