This week saw a new edition to the Poros
Island calendar. The local Women's Institute together with funding from
the Mayors Office promoted a display that would bring nostalgia back to
the hearts of locals. Throwing away the modern technique of fishing from
boats the Canali Fisherman returned to old methods of fishing from the
beach. A large crowd witnessed the display at dusk with music food and
drink provided to make an evening of celebration. Below are some of the
images capturing the event. |

| The nets are connected to long ropes which in turn are handed to the fisherman on the shore. The rowing boat then casts the nets out from the shore. After a short period the fisherman, now in two teams collect the net by slowly reeling in the nets. |

Sadly on this occasion the fish were somewhat reluctant to play the game. Whereas in times gone by the collection would have required some muscle power by those involved to haul in the catch on this night it could have been achieved by chidden.. perhaps a tragic example of how modern fishing has depleted the stocks to such low levels. Then again there is always next year!! |
