POROS PRESENT
Many artifacts such as cannons, anchors and so on, can be seen along
the waterfront of Poros Town.
The Temple of Poseidon may require a vivid imagination
to picture how it may have looked, but the stunning views over the Saronic
Gulf are well worth the trip.
The Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi (meaning source of life)
was built in the Byzantine style, between 1726-1732 in pine tree forest.
The monastery takes its name from the nearby spring, where the water is
said to have healing powers. At the entrance, where the poor used to wait
to receive money or food, is the beautiful little church of Agii Anargyri.
The walls of the church are said to be from Turkey and inside can be found
an icon of the Virgin Mary painted by the Italian artist and founder of
the Academy of fine arts in Athens, Rafael Ceccoli. The icon is said to
resemble the artist’s daughter who died at the age of 21.
The Clock Tower is probably the most visited site on
the island. Its a bit of a climb from the waterfront and gives an excellent
view of the town.
For the more energetic, a trip to the Old Windmill at
the highest point on Sfairia should not be missed. The views to the East
and West along the strait are breathtaking. It is accessible from the
town either on the East or West side if you plan to walk, or from the
North if you wish to go by road.
A small but interesting Museum can be found on the West
side of the harbour at Koryzi square. It is open daily except Monday from
8:30am to 3pm. Admission is free.
At Russian bay on the East of Kalavria the ruins of the
old Russian Naval station can be found. The ruins were moved to the bay
between 1834 and 1836 from the site of the current Naval station near
Canali.
The House of Capodistrias, the first Governor of Greece
after the 1821 revolution, can be seen on the West side of town near the
waterfront. The building can be easily distinguished, as it is perched
on a rock, and was built in the Hydraiot style in dark grey stone with
white painted surrounding walls.
