POROS ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY
Registered charity No. 6711/2001
Poros Animal Welfare Society was legally registered in Feburary 2002. Our main aim is to sterilize stray cats and dogs as well as encourage the local pet owners to have their pets sterilized and we are getting promising results. From January 2003 our animal clinic has been up and running thanks to the Mayor of Poros providing us with a room which is located by the Mill at the top of Poros town.

Our vet Yianni from Aegina comes on a regular basis, usually on a Tuesday about the middle of each month, posters are placed in public places a week before he comes, for example; supermarkets, chemists, the petrol station, the local meat market in Poros and also the Council Office board. On one of our last visits by the vet, we had three female dogs sterilised, preventing more puppies being born and becoming strays.

We also have visits from the organization, Friends of the Cats, who often stay on Poros for two days at a time, where we usually manage to get many cats sterilized. As usual our society is always struggling for funds, during the summer of 2003 we held four fund raising events, including a Curry Night; Greek Night; Barbecue Night and a South Sea Island Night. All of these events were a success and we would like to thank all the people who attended and the owners of the premises for their co-operation.

We have recently placed posters around Poros regarding the poisoning of cats and dogs, which is illegal and explains the laws against this and that anyone caught will be penalized. Also there is a new law to be introduced this year where all owned pets must be micro chipped, this hopefully will discourage the abandoning of pets.

We also have numerous collection boxes al lover Poros including the Post Office, hotels and various offices. We also appreciate any donations made. We would like to point out that we are always looking for volunteers who may be able to help in some way. We would like to thank everyone who continues to support us including the shopkeepers, tavemas and all our members, plus our overseas members. Keep up the good work.
