Fish is very much a part of the Mediterranean diet, but you
will have to be up early if you want to get the best fish fresh from the boat. Every morning the fishing boats return to the quays of Poros and Galatas with their catch sorted and ready for sale. Snapper, Eel, Skate, Barracuda, you can take your pick. The locals will be there, inspecting the catch and haggling over the price before making their purchase and carrying it off in a plastic bag. If the idea of the fish takes your fancy, but you don't like the idea of getting up too early, then why not try the fish and meat market. You will find it on the waterfront, between the Alpha Bank and the Post Office. They generally have a very good selection, but again the later you go, then the less choice there is. Alternatively, you may like to take all the hassle out of having a delicious seafood meal, by taking yourself off to a taverna or restaurant and have it cooked and served to your table. You may also find that the owners have their own fishing boats within the family. Some establishments specialise in seafood, while others have a more varied menu. Octopus and squid are popular with the Greeks so you will smell the aroma of these being cooked on the grill, often outside the front of the taverna. Fish is rich in protein and vitamins so it is a good choice for a healthy diet as well as providing a tasty meal. Let's face it, it's not often we get the chance to have such a meal so fresh. |
