Around the Island.
Most visitors to the island are attracted to the town and the beaches
but there is much more to Poros that should be seen. The two islands that
form what is now known as Poros are "Kalavria", the large island
to the North and "Sfairia", the smaller Southern island. In
contrast the two could not be more different. Sfairia is best known for
the town and harbour, with the highest concentration of shops, bars, restaurants
and tavernas. It has only one small beach to the North Eastern side, close
to the small strip of water, known as "canali", which separates
the islands.
Kalavira towers over Sfiaria like a big brother, with its pine clad hills
reaching some 358 meters above sea level and protecting the smaller Sfairia,
with its highest point at 91 meters, from the North winds and open seas
of the Saronic Gulf.
Kalavria means "gentle breeze" and is true to its name when
enjoying the large stretches of sheltered beaches and bays to the South
of the island. Naturally, accommodation, shops and tavernas and are not
far from the beaches. Inland the scenery changes and unlike many Greek
islands Kalavria is rich in pine forest. A good road runs through the
hills from Canali to Askeli but is is recommended to hire some form of
transport as this peaks at around 300 meters with outstanding scenery
in all directions. There are a couple of places to stop and eat if you
get hungry or are in need of a drink. Even a chance to have a dip in the
pool while you take in the view over Sfiaria from about 200 meters up!
